New electric vehicle charging stations open in Lethbridge

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The City of Lethbridge has installed multiple new electric vehicle (EV) charging stations.

In total, 22 charging stations, powered by Quebec-based company FLO, have been placed in four different areas of the city, and are open to the public and available for use as of Friday, June 30, 2023.

The Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden held a demonstration on the morning of June 30 for their two new 100 kW capacity FLO DC fast chargers in the parking lot.

The other 20 level 2 FLO chargers in Lethbridge are stationed at:

  • Lethbridge Regional Park ‘n’ Ride Transit Terminal level 3 (10 units, including two accessible stalls)
  • ENMAX Centre parking lot (six units)
  • City Hall parking area (four units)

There are also four level 2 chargers located at the Cavendish Farms Centre on the west side, which were installed at the facility during original construction.

Stewart Purkis, Project Manager for Waste & Environment with the City said, “I would say this is a very early start. There was one other DC fast charger put in about five years ago at the health unit in downtown. It’s a 50 kilowatt unit because that’s all they made at that time. Now the sizes of charges are increasing, and the number of them going in, I think will be jaw dropping.”

The chargers will run on the FLO Network, which will be accessible using an app, and will allow drivers to find stations, initiate and pay for a charging session.

The EV charging project is part of a grant initiative, and details on funding will be released in August.
