Hurricanes fall 1-0 to Blades

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes suffered a 1-0 overtime loss to the Saskatoon Blades on Friday, February 15, 2024.

The Blades outshot the Hurricanes 10-6 in the first period. The Canes were unable to capitalize on two power play opportunities.

Lethbridge began the second period with strong scoring chances from both Miguel Marques and Will Sharpe. However, neither were able to score on Blades goaltender Evan Gardner.

The Hurricanes had another strong chance after killing two penalties. Landen Ward was able to beat Evan Gardner, but was denied by the crossbar. The Canes were outshot 9-7 in the second frame.

Brady Smith kept the Canes in the game in the third period. He made numerous saves on the penalty kill in the final minutes of the game, including a point-blank chance for the Blades’ leading scorer Trevor Wong. The Blades outshot the Hurricanes 11-3 in the final period of regulation.

Overtime was controlled by Saskatoon, they held the Canes without a shot. With 2:26 left in the extra frame, Tanner Molendyk scored his eighth goal of the season to win the game 1-0 for the Blades.

The Hurricanes have lost five straight games, and their five-game home win-streak has ended.

Lethbridge plays the second half of their back-to-back Saturday night against the Prince Albert Raiders.
