LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes traveled to Saskatchewan for a two game road trip on the weekend, and came out victorious in both contests.

Hurricanes vs. Blades

The first game of the trip was on Friday, March 1 against the Saskatoon Blades. After a first period that had no contributions on the scoresheet, the Blades struck first when Easton Armstrong’s 28th goal of the season.

However, the Hurricanes responded a little over 10 minutes later when Brayden Edwards buried a rebound on a 2-on-1 to tie the game. Logan Wormald got the assist on the goal. Edwards added another goal from Miguel Marques and Noah Chadwick before the second ended. Hurricanes goaltender Brady Smith made an outstanding save in the second frame as well, batting a puck out of the air to keep it out of his net.

In the third, the Hurricanes got their insurance goal with Hayden Pakkala’s 11th of the season at the 8:02 mark to make it 3-1. Marques added an empty net goal with four seconds left to finish up the game at 4-1.

Smith was named the first star of the game for stopping 31 of 32 shots, while Edwards’ two goals earned him second star. Armstrong was named the third star.

Hurricanes vs. Raiders

The Hurricanes then traveled to Prince Albert on Saturday, March 2 to face off against the Raiders.

As opposed to the Blades game, the first period had plenty of scoring. Edwards continued his hot streak by scoring the first goal of the game just 3:33 into the period, assisted by Dylan Sydor and Noah Chadwick. After Ryder Ritchie tied it up for the Raiders, Pakkala buried a rebound from the slot on the powerplay to make it 2-1. Carter Dereniwsky and Kooper Gizowski got the assists on the goal.

Pakkala then continued his strong game against his former team by scoring a highlight reel goal, where he drew the puck between his legs and wired a shot past Max Hildebrand for his 13th of the season.

In the second period, Sydor scored his 24th goal of the season on the powerplay, his first point since returning to the Hurricanes from injury. Gizowski and Logan McCutcheon added assists on the 4-1 goal. In the third period, the Hurricanes managed to hold on for a 4-3 victory despite two goals by Krzysztof Macias, who finished with three points on the night.

Harrison Meneghin was excellent for Lethbridge, stopping 37 shots for his 25th win of the season. Macias was the game’s first star, while Pakkala and Gizowski’s two point efforts netted them second and third star, respectively.

The Hurricanes will look to continue their win streak on Wednesday at the ENMAX Centre when they face off against the Medicine Hat Tigers. Puck drop is at 7:00.
