“I’m glad that they [provincial government], understands what industry impact is to Alberta. I really want people to know that we are a $48 million dollar economic impact to Lethbridge and area, that’s pretty big,” she said.

Alberta racing is big business, each year 1.2 million fans watch and wager $137 million at the five race tracks in the province or the 41 off-track betting facilities.

Rossi said that that while jockeys flock to Rocky Mountain from all corners of the world; there are some who have been spurred on to make a name for themselves right in Lethbridge.

“They seem to be schooled the old way, on the backstretch. There’s Shannon Beauregard, she’s made it quite big and she started out here, as a groom and exercising the horses,” she said.

Rossi said that the races are suitable for the entire family.

There’s live music, kids’ activities, daily draws and a mini market.
