University Begins Planning for Golden Anniversary

Sep 9, 2016 | 10:35 AM

LETHBRIDGE –  Next year will be filled with celebrations as the University of Lethbridge recognizes its 50th year as a post-secondary institution.

Everything kicks off on Founder’s Day Weekend from January 13 to 15, with a number of activities for the community to participate in.

The City of Lethbridge is even jumping on board! Council agreed on Tuesday (Sep. 6) to light City Hall up in blue and gold over the same weekend, and participate in other activities in 2017.

University President, Dr. Mike Mahon, couldn’t be more grateful for the support. “The university wouldn’t exist were it not for the City. So, it really needs to be a joint celebration. The City Hall endorsement, I think, underscores the fact that the City and the university are partners on every level.”

Other anniversary highlights include a joint college and university event in March to demonstrate the impact of educational institutions.

A two-day “Let It Shine On” outdoor music festival is also slated for early September, hosted at the Community Sports Stadium, that will feature local, national and international entertainment.

“I think a 50th celebration is about two things. One is about celebrating all that has happened over the first 50 years… But it’s also about looking to the future,” added Dr. Mahon.

The University of Lethbridge is home to more than 8,000 students and 1,152 employees, boasting over 41,000 alumni.
