A pair of ACAC championships coming to Lethbridge College in 2017

LETHBRIDGE – There will be a significant spotlight on Lethbridge next spring, as Lethbridge College is set to host a pair of ACAC (Alberta Colleges Athletics Conference) championships.

Athletes competing in women’s basketball and indoor track will come to our city from around Alberta, with both events coming to a close on the same weekend.

The women’s basketball championship will run March 1 to 4 in the Val Matteotti Gymnasium, while indoor track goes March 3 and 4 at the University of Lethbridge’s First Choice Savings Centre.

“March 1st to 4th is going to be an exciting time, not only to showcase the college, but Kodiak Athletics and Lethbridge and area, so we are very excited to be able to take that opportunity to host those type of events,” stated Kodiaks Athletics manager, Todd Caughlin.

“You get something like that to be able to showcase what we have here, and it’s going to do nothing but help our coaches be able to show what kind of student athletes we have on campus already, and then what kind of programs we promote.”

He went on to note that a successful weekend could have a big impact on the future.

“This is hopefully going to be a launching point, so that every year from here on out, whether it be volleyball next year, we’re going to be hosting an event,” explained Caughlin. “We have a beautiful facility, an amazing college and a great city to be able to do it with.”

Women’s basketball head coach, Brad Karren, weighed in on the announcement, saying having home-court advantage is always a big positive.

“We’ve got pretty much everybody back and it’s a good team, it’s a close team and they’ve been together for a few years, so that’s nice for me,” Karen told Lethbridge News Now. “I’ve recruited a couple of local kids and added those to the bunch. It’s a really nice group, they’re competitive and right now we’re 6-0 [in pre-season play] and that’s a good way to start.”

Indoor track coach, Bertil Johansson – who is entering his 30th season as coach – is also very optimistic as he looks forward to the event.

“This year in cross country we’re ranked top one or two in Alberta, so having that leading into indoor track, I think we’re going to do quite well, we’re hosting so I’m hoping we can win both men and women.”
