Edmonton City Council considers safe injection sites

May 3, 2017 | 11:09 AM

EDMONTON – Edmonton city council has voted overwhelmingly in favour of setting up four supervised drug injection sites in the inner core.

By a 10-1 margin, councillors voted Tuesday (May 2) to have Mayor Don Iveson ask the federal government to approve the sites and have the province fund them.

There has been opposition to the plan, but Iveson says evidence shows the injection sites reduce crime, infection rates and overdoses.

The Royal Alexandra Hospital is among the four sites under consideration.

At this point, Lethbridge’s Coalition on Opioid Abuse is completing a needs assessment, by surveying up to 200 drug users to see what they identify as the services that they need.
