Discounted tickets and other notes ahead of Whoop-Up Days

LETHBRIDGE – One of Lethbridge’s summer highlights is nearly upon us, as Whoop-Up Days gets underway next week.

It begins with the parade on Tuesday (Aug. 22), followed by the Grandstand Concert series, featuring Theory of a Deadman, The Trews, April Wine and .38 Special.

Ahead of the festivities, Doug Kryzanowski with Exhibition Park called the media together, to go over a few last-minute items.

The big one – which he says should appeal to those looking to save money – centred around advance Gate and Super tickets, which are on sale until Monday (Aug. 21) at midnight. By purchasing them before the deadline, you’ll be able to get Gate tickets for $12 ($3 savings) and Super tickets – which get you onto all the rides as well – for $40 ($15 savings).

Kryzanowski also took some time to explain exactly how tickets will work for the concert series, for which tickets are still available.

“The $59 ticket for the concert includes your gate admission and includes a separate ticket into the concert area at the Grandstand,” stated Kryzanowski. “Those areas obviously will be monitored, and you’re not going to get in unless you have a ticket. And we will sell tickets at the gate, and Gas King will continue to sell them up to the time of the concert each night, on Tuesday and Wednesday.”

He did acknowledge that their planned fireworks display is unlikely at this point, based on the extremely dry conditions.

“We’re prisoners to the weather, there’s no doubt about it,” said Kryzanowski. “We’re in daily contact with the fire marshal, but the forecast doesn’t show very well that we’ll be able to light off fireworks. We do have one on the Tuesday night and the Wednesday night that may be approved, but it’s only a small little spurt by the Grandstand saluting our 120th [anniversary of Exhibition Park], but it won’t be very high in the air, and we haven’t gotten approval on that, but they’re looking at it.

“It’s a game time decision, and it’s not our decision, it’s Mother Nature’s, and then the fire department.”

Kryzanowski also noted that due to recent cancellations, there are still 10 spaces available in the parade.
