LETHBRIDGE — April Dawn Irving was returned to Lethbridge on Tuesday (Jan 22), after being arrested in Stonewall, Manitoba, for outstanding warrants for animal cruelty in Milk River.

Irving, now aged 59, faces 13 Provincial counts of cruelty to animals, one count of causing suffering to animals and failure to appear in court.

She was arrested and charged with cruelty to animals after five dogs were found dead on a property near Milk River, along with more than 200 neglected animals that were seized in January of 2015. Autopsies revealed the five dogs had died of starvation.

The animals that were alive, were found dehydrated, starving and chained to stakes.

Her court case in Lethbridge was never concluded after she failed to show up on two separate occasions for court dates – the last in February of 2016.  At that time, an arrest warrant was issued.

Irving’s lawyer, at the time, intended to enter not guilty pleas and wanted to have the court abandon a psychiatric assessment that had been ordered.

In 2016, Saskatchewan RCMP released a photo of a woman they believed was Irving and in Jan. 2017, it’s believed she was living in Jamaica.

It’s not known how long Irving had been in Manitoba, or how RCMP located her.  When she appeared via CCTV on Thursday, (Jan 24), she held up a piece of white paper, to prevent view of her face.

Irving has applied for legal aid and is in the process of acquiring a Lawyer.  She remains in custody, by consent, until her next court appearance on January 30.
