LETHBRIDGE — It seems that there is nothing to stop age from creeping up on you.

Some people go from happily living life without issues to instant pain, while, for others who aren’t so lucky, their pain just increases as time ticks on.

Osteoarthritis (OA) can be one of those issues that inhibit you from the life you want to live. Adaptive Technologies are no strangers to pain, especially osteoarthritis in the knees.

“We have had people come in with so much pain they’ve had to use a wheelchair and with the use of knee brace they are back walking” says Certified Orthotist Ryan Cochrane. “Knee bracing is a proven and effective tool to help relieve knee pain. By providing a light push on the affected side to open the joint space and help the knee track better we can help reduce not only pain but swelling as well.”

Although it’s known that knee bracing can help reduce symptoms of osteoarthritis, a lot of people find the thought of wearing a brace unbearable.

To help make the decision easier, Adaptive Technologies is providing patients with free two-week knee brace trials. This allows their patients to not only see if a knee brace will help relieve pain, but also if the individual will tolerate wearing a brace.

“We have found that allowing people to wear the knee brace over a longer period of time really helps solidify that it relieves pain and isn’t a cumbersome device to wear,” says Koji Duncan, Certified Orthotist.

The service is free to try for anyone suffering from OA and really relieves symptoms when combined with physio and/or cortisone injections.

“The other benefit, is that it’s covered by Alberta Aids to Daily Living. If you’re over 65, the brace is completely covered and covered 75 per cent if under the age of 65,” says Emilie Soper, a Certified Pedorthist.

If a financial concern is the main deterrent for trying a knee brace, it’s a great program that the Alberta government offers.

Consider a knee brace if you want to get back to living the life you want to live.

“Most people end up of getting pain in their retirement, when they are supposed to be enjoying life after work.” says Soper.

As well, Cochrane notes, “You should always consider all your options to help you get back to life before the pain.”

Whether the options include physiotherapy, massage, acupuncture, or chiropractic, Adaptive Technologies wants to be a small part in your recovery.

The team at Adaptive Technologies is excited to work alongside other health care professionals in Lethbridge and help you adapt to the next stage in your life.
