LETHBRIDGE, AB – Several groups from Coaldale came out to the Canadian Blood Services (CBS) office on Friday to donate blood.

The Coaldale Cares coalition consists of the Kinsmen Club, Kate Andrews High School, Town of Coaldale council, and Intercontinental Trucking Body (ITB).

ITB’s Sales Manager Vincent Van Seters says their company helped to start the annual holiday blood donation campaign.

“ITB’s been involved in this campaign for about 12 years now. We started off when one of our workers needed blood transfusions for cancer treatments. Because of that, we started kicking off where we get the Blood Bus actually [coming] out and picks up our employees.”

In the years that followed, other organizations in Coaldale jumped on board. Members of all four groups LNN talked to all said they knew someone who needed a blood donation at one point.

Territory Manager with CBS Lisa Castro says they typically do not get as many donations at the end of the year as they do at other times because people go on holidays, yet they actually need more given the increased number of road collisions caused by the winter weather.

“We typically need 80 donors on each of the holiday dates, so on Christmas Eve, Boxing Day, and on the 31st. We’re really going to need that support just so that we can make sure that patients are able to receive the platelets they need during the holiday season.”

The CBS office will be open on each of the stat holidays from 9:30 am to 1:30 pm.

The rest of the Melcor Centre mall will be closed, so if you are planning to donate blood on those days, you will only be able to access the building from the top floor of the parking lot.
