City looking into exemptions for mandatory large condo recycling bylaw

Sep 23, 2020 | 12:36 PM

LETHBRIDGE, AB– Lethbridge City Council approved the motion to draft bylaw amendments that would exempt large condominiums to recycle through the city at this week’s city council meeting(Monday, Sept. 21).

Large condos over 45 units could be exempt from mandatory participation in the City-run blue bin program as long as they have a private recycling plan in place which meets or exceeds City standards.

There was no debate to put through the motion of drafting amendments to the bylaw that will be decided on at a later date.

A lot of commotion came from last week’s Community Issues Committee meeting when a group representing around 10 large condo boards told councillors their current recycling programs could be privately run and would be much cheaper at the end of the day.

Councillors can add amendments to the already existing bylaw and once it’s passed, it would let large condos run private recycling programs that could benefit people living in those condos.

New amendments can be added before the next council meeting and the motion will be brought back to council before the end of this year.
