Provide Feedback on School District 51 Draft Sexual Orientation and Gender Policy

Jan 27, 2016 | 9:10 AM

LETHBRIDGE – Lethbridge School District 51 is looking for feedback on their Draft Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity policy.

The draft policy has been posted online for the public to review.

Superintendent, Cheryl Gilmore, says they made the first draft available for a couple of different reasons. “Generally speaking, the policy doesn’t get posted publicly until after first reading. The board has made an exception in this case. They decided that they would get feedback even earlier in the process… [They did this] for two reasons, the first being the significant amount of public interest, and the second is because we feel that there’s still some continued confusion about what this policy is, and what the ‘Guidelines for Best Practice’ from the province is.”

The public can fill out a form and email it back, or just use the link to a GoogleForms document.

The idea is to increase the level of transparency in the development of the policy.

Once feedback has been collected, the Policy Advisory Committee, which is made up up representatives from stakeholder groups like parents and the district’s three unions, will review it and determine any trends that should be considered. They’ll also review law and legislation requirements, and whether the policy meets the board’s vision, mission and beliefs.

It’s then scheduled for first reading at the Board of Trustees meeting on February 23rd.
