New Way to Learn About the Oldman River Valley

LETHBRIDGE: It took the efforts of over 50 environmental groups, but Lethbridge’s Helen Schuler Nature Centre has finally unveiled its River Valley Exhibit.

The permanent exhibits highlight the unique features of the Oldman River Valley and how it came to be, through a mix of state-of-the-art technology and traditional interpretation methods.

Nature Interpretation Coordinator, Coreen Putman, says the purpose is to really connect residents and visitors to the environment around them in a new way.

“What you’ll find are scenes or surprising ways in which people can experience the Oldman River in a way that they normally wouldn’t just standing on the banks,” explained Putman. “There’s these interesting aquatic scenes that you get to see in to, or be drawn into a microscopic look at. So, it’s a way of just changing somebody’s perspective and awakening that idea of discovery, and realizing that there are a lot of different ways to look at the world.”

Putman added that this is the Nature Centre’s first outdoor interactive exhibit.

The centre hopes to add on to the exhibit later on. The plan is to provide more environmental education and nature interpretation to those walking in the river valley without having to go into the centre itself.
