LETHBRIDGE:   The Val Matteotti Bantam AAA Golden Hawks captured the AMBHL South Division championship by defeating the Calgary Bisons in game five of the best of five series Wednesday night.

The hard fought battle saw the Golden Hawks head into the third period down 1-0, despite outplaying the Bisons for much of period two.

Byron Fancy made some great saves in net to keep his team in a position to strike back, and the Hawks tied the game on a goal by Captain Bowen Byram, two minutes into the third period. The goal elevated the team’s effort for the remaining 18 minutes of the game.

The Bisons took a kneeing penalty with just under 10 minutes remaining and the Hawks capitalized, as Carson Dyck scored 30 seconds into the power play. With under two minutes remaining and the Bisons goalie on the bench, Zack Stringer got the puck off the wall to Michael Horon who scored into the empty net for the win.

The Hawks are excited to move on to the Provincial Championship.  Games one and two will be in Sherwood Park on Saturday and Sunday.  The team returns home to host the Flyers next weekend with Game 3 at Nicholas Sheran Arena on Saturday, March 19th at 5:45pm.
