Police Warn About Canada Revenue Agency Scam

Apr 7, 2016 | 10:52 AM

LETHBRIDGE – With tax season upon us, Lethbridge Police are warning about a scam involving the Canada Revenue Agency.

The victim will receive a call, email or text message from someone claiming to be with the Canada Revenue Agency who demands payment from the victim, citing they owe money and will be arrested if they do not pay.

The messages are often threatening and the caller at times can be very aggressive. The caller will ask for payment in a variety of forms from gift cards to money transfers, all of which are not the standard method of payment for taxes.

The phone numbers are often “spoofed” which makes it difficult to track where they originated from.
