Women Accused of Killing Their Mothers Both Appear in Court

LETHBRIDGE – Two unrelated cases in which women are accused of killing their mothers, both appeared in Lethbridge court Friday morning.

Jessica Lee Ann Praill and Lisa Freihaut appeared via CCTV from the Lethbridge Correctional Centre. Both face a charge of second degree murder.

First up was the 28-year old Praill. Duty Counsel spoke on her behalf, saying Praill had been denied coverage by legal aid and that she would be making another application to secure their assistance. Her matter was then adjourned to May 13.

On April 28, police were called to a report that a 54-year old woman, identified as Shelley Kristine Praill, had been stabbed at a home along the 2300 block of 18 Street North. She was taken to hospital where she died a short time late.

Police say their investigation shows the victim had been involved in an argument that resulted in her being stabbed.

Later in the morning, 51-year old Freihaut had her matter set over to May 10. Her lawyer, Andre Ouellette, noted that they are hoping to set a date for a bail hearing when she returns to court.

On January 17, 2016, Freihaut and her husband called police, saying they found Irene Carter’s body in her home along the 300 block of Normandy Road South while going to check-up on her. An autopsy confirmed she died from multiple stab wounds, and police believe she was killed on January 13.

In that investigation, police say they believe the victim had been involved in a dispute over finances, and that a physical altercation resulted in her death.
