LETHBRIDGE:  The Lethbridge Public school Board gave a nod to the city’s heritage in naming a soon-to be-built elementary school.

The new Copperwood-area school, expected to open in the fall of 2017, will be known as Coalbanks Elementary.

Seams of coal were found along the coulees in the 1860’s and the seasonal settlement that sprang up in the river valley in the early 1880’s was dubbed Coal Banks. It was several years later the name Lethbridge was adopted when s permanent town site was established on the prairie above the river.

The name Coalbanks was selected for the new school, at a Board of Trustees meeting Tuesday (May 24th) afternoon.

The selection process included public feedback by way of written submissions and an online form.  A committee comprised of a parent, a student, a teacher and a principal, along with the District’s superintendent and a local historical society member, narrowed the list of submissions to four selections for the Board of Trustees to make a final choice.

Now that a name has been selected the Board will begin work on choosing an administrative team for the new school.
