Public Input Needed for Waterton Visitors Centre Project

Jun 18, 2016 | 6:34 AM

WATERTON LAKES NATIONAL PARK – Your feedback is needed this afternoon (Saturday, June 18), regarding the new, proposed Waterton Lakes Visitor Centre.

A public engagement session will be held at the Bayshore Inn Convention Centre, located within the townsite, from 1:30-pm to 5-pm.

The current centre was built back in 1958, and Parks Canada says it’s too small to address visitor needs. Visitations have increased by over 50-percent since 2000.

Last year, $7.6-million was allocated for this project alone.

“This is the most important of all the new projects in Waterton Lakes National Park. This reception centre will welcome Canadians and visitors from around the world, and provide them with opportunities to learn about the park’s cultural and environmental significance and its international status as part of the world’s first International Peace Park and World Heritage Site,” noted Field Unit Superintendent, Ifan Thomas.

The project sees a new centre being built along Windflower Avenue, near the entrance of the Townsite Campground and adjacent to the tennis courts and playground.

Parks Canada says construction should begin in 2018, and be complete by 2019.
