Conquering Mountains the Key to Ending Family Violence for Trevor Stuart

Jul 11, 2016 | 2:18 PM

LETHBRIDGE:  A large crowd gathered in City Council Chambers Monday afternoon to watch Trevor Stuart receive the key to the City.  The honour was bestowed on Stuart for completing several mountain climbing expeditions, including Mt. Everest, as he tried to raise awareness of family violence and financial support for the YWCA women’s shelter.

The presentation formally honours individuals or groups for their contributions or accomplishments.

Trevor reached the pinnacle of a two-year long project with the biggest climb of his life, when summited Mt. Everest at 3:45-am on May 20th.

For the local realtor and philanthropist the climb was part of his Campaign to “End Family Violence” and raise money for the Lethbridge YWCA Harbour House Women’s Shelter. The effort was dubbed “Elevating Lives One Peak at a Time”.

“Growing up in a home where there was a lot of domestic violence, it made me realize that there are so many more people out there that grew up just like I did that are still trapped in it,” notes Trevor.

Trevor had already completed climbs in Bolivia and Argentina, as part of his initiative but, Everest was the most dangerous climb of his career. However, he put it all in perspective.

“Nineteen people last year died on Everest, and 43 women in Alberta died last year from domestic violence. I think it’s harder to live in domestic violence than it is to climb Everest.”

“Climbing Mt. Everest is an amazing accomplishment in itself but to take on a feat of that magnitude with the goal of helping your community is truly admirable,” says Mayor Spearman. “Trevor is a very worthy recipient of the Key to the City.”

“Trevor is an inspiration to many,” says Councillor Bridget Mearns. “His climbing accomplishments are truly awe inspiring but he also never lost focus of his real goal – bringing awareness to domestic violence and fundraising to build a safe haven for women and children escaping violence. “Elevating Lives” was a campaign executed by raw grit, sweat, tears, rock solid determination and heart. Trevor is truly an outstanding citizen and ambassador for Lethbridge.”

Trevor will hold an encore presentation of “Conquering Everest”, where he will talk about his journey. It takes place on Saturday, July 16th at 2:00-pm at the Lethbridge Lodge.  Everyone is invited to hear about his adventures.
