LETHBRIDGE – School District 51 is helping teachers reach literacy goals for local students.

The Lethbridge Board of Trustees say “supporting student achievement and closing the achievement gap” as a priority for the past three years, and has now allocated $350,000 to do just that.

Recent learning opportunities have targeted teachers in grades one through six, revealing that they need more resources to be able to deliver effective literacy education. All elementary and middle school underwent extensive learning for reading assessment and level literacy, too.

Those funds will be used to buy small sets of books to use with groups of students, as well as other items needed for targeted intervention for those students who need extra support.

A newly developed Literacy Action Plan has also been put in place to create a culture that stresses the importance of identifying goals, and using appropriate assessments to reach them.
