Interim Conservative leader helps campaign in Medicine Hat

“Medicine Hat is not the priority for Justin Trudeau,” said interim Conservative leader Rona Ambrose.

It’s what she wants Albertans to think about before heading to the polls on Monday.

Ambrose flew into Medicine Hat Thursday morning, on the heels of a visit from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau last week.

As an Albertan herself, she said she understands the tough times families here are facing.

“People are suffering. People are hurting,” she said. “A lot of people are worried about their kids. They’re worried about their mortgages. And what do we have? We have a Prime Minister that is imposing a punitive carbon tax on a region of the country that’s going to suffer the most because of it.”

After a stop at a local greenhouse, Ambrose made her way to the Motz campaign headquarters.

“Her purpose for coming here today is not to have a pep rally,” he said. “Her purpose was to meet with residents here and listen to their issues and concerns.”

Ambrose said one of her party’s main concerns is the looming carbon tax and how much of an impact it’ll have on the people who call Alberta home.

“A carbon tax is a fuel tax. That’s what it is. So it affects the heating in your home. It affects how much it costs to fill up your car. It affects the transportation of goods, so it affects groceries. It affects literally everything that we do,” she said.

“Why he’s doing this now actually just reinforces his disdain for this province,” Motz said.

Another subject which has been talked about on the campaign trail is job creation.

Ambrose said there’s no secret as to how to do it, but didn’t provide any specific examples.

Instead she listed off cuts Trudeau has made which she believes has hurt the process.

“He got rid of the tax-free saving account. He raised businesses taxes. He raised income taxes. He took away the child fitness tax credit. He took away credits for text books for students, for tuition for students,” Ambrose said.

It’s something Motz hopes he can change in the coming days.

“It’s critical that we send the Justin Trudeau Liberals a very clear message on October 24th that we are done with his wastefulness. We’re done with his carbon tax and his inactivity on jobs and opposition to pipelines.”
