Halbgewachs hat-trick too much for Hurricanes as they fall 4-1

MOOSE JAW – A brief two game road trip through Saskatchewan hasn’t been an ideal start to 2017 for the Lethbridge Hurricanes, who are now 0-2 in the New Year.

They dropped their second straight contest Wednesday night (Jan. 4), falling 4-1 to the Warriors in Moose Jaw, who were powered largely by forward Jayden Halbgewachs.

The Warriors opened the scoring with the only goal of the first period, outshooting the Hurricanes 10-6. The two clubs would trade goals in the second, with Moose Jaw adding to their lead at the 11:51 mark – on Halbgewachs’ first of the game – only to have Lethbridge pull back within one five minutes later on Brennan Riddle’s second marker of the season.

While still trailing, the Hurricanes did start to turn the tide, first outshooting the Warriors 13-8 in the second, then 16-5 in the third.

Despite the lopsided shot numbers, Halbgewachs would fire two more home in the third, capping his hat-trick and the win for Moose Jaw.

The Hurricanes road record has now slipped to 8-10-1-2, with their defensive game proving to be their Achilles heel away from home. In 20 games as the visitor this season they have surrendered 93 goals, way up from the 59 they have allowed in 19 games at home. Their offensive game meanwhile has been much more consistent, with 72 goals on the road and 71 at the Enmax Centre.

The good news is the Canes now return home – where they’re 12-5-2-0 – for a pair of weekend games. They start by hosting Edmonton Friday (Jan. 6) and Red Deer on Saturday (Jan.7).
