Local man to stand trial for alleged agriculture fraud

LETHBRIDGE – A preliminary inquiry has ended ahead of schedule for a Lethbridge man, accused in a significant fraud case. The prelim – which determines if there is enough evidence to proceed to trial – was set to run for two weeks (Jan. 16-27), but wrapped up Tuesday (Jan. 17) with the judge ordering Scott James Piggott to stand trial.

Before the inquiry got underway, both the Crown and defence noted it would be much faster than anticipated, as the Crown narrowed the list of charges it would seek committal to stand trial on.

Piggott was charged in 2015, for offences that allegedly occurred between March and July of 2013. Police were informed that a local agriculture business had been defrauded out of more than $800,000. Taber Police say the scam involved obtaining hay under false pretenses, without ever paying for it.

A trial date has yet to be scheduled.
