Overtime victory gives the Hurricanes a two game win streak

LETHBRIDGE – A goal by Zak Zborosky early in overtime has put the Lethbridge Hurricanes on a two game win streak.

It was another well matched game at the ENMAX Centre on Saturday (Jan. 21), as the Hurricanes edged the Calgary Hitmen 3-2. On Wednesday (Jan. 18), the Lethbridge squad faced off against the Swift Current Broncos, taking a 5-1 win on home ice.

Alex Baer opened scoring late in the first period for the Hurricanes, assisted by Brennan Menell. Calgary’s Matteo Gennaro quickly took charge in the second frame, though.

He took advantage of the Hitmen’s five power play opportunities, firing one in by the 1:58 mark and getting past Lethbridge goalie, Stuart Skinner, again just six minutes later.

All hope for a comeback in the third period was seemingly lost for the Hurricanes. But Tyler Wong made a shocking power play goal, one of the team’s seven opportunities, against Calgary goalie, Trevor Martin, with just 18 seconds left in the game.

Skinner stayed strong into overtime, blocking three shots. But the Hitmen just couldn’t hold on, as Zak Zborosky, assisted by Brennan Menell and Giorgio Estephan, had the game winner on another power play just 3:21 into overtime.

This win has pushed the Hurricanes to a 26-15-4-3 overall record. The Lethbridge boys are on a break now before starting a two game road trip next Friday (Jan. 27) against the Prince Albert Raiders.
