Housing starts on the rebound in Lethbridge

Jul 11, 2017 | 10:22 AM

LETHBRIDGE — Housing starts have just about caught up to last year in Lethbridge, thanks in part to a strong June.

The latest monthly data from Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. (CMHC) shows 41 single-family homes were started in the Lethbridge census metropolitan area, up from 33 last year. Fourteen of them were in the surrounding area.

In addition, construction started on 17 multiple-unit homes (all within the city of Lethbridge), up from 8 in 2016, for a total of 58.

That brings the total for the first six months of the year to 303, compared to 307 a year ago. Construction within the city itself accounts for 237 of the total, but a year-over-year comparison is not available.

Edmonton and Calgary are up so far in 2017, and so is Fort McMurray where the rebuild continues from last year’s fire. Year-to-date numbers have fallen in Grande Prairie, Medicine Hat, and Red Deer although June housing starts were strong in those cities.
