Snow welcome news for Waterton fire battle

Oct 4, 2017 | 9:40 AM

WATERTON LAKES NATIONAL PARK – Twenty centimetres of snow doesn’t hurt, when fighting a wildfire.

The Kenow fire burning within Waterton Lakes National Park is now considered under control, and it’s being patrolled. Parks Canada said it could still smoulder underground during the winter, and smoke may still be visible for weeks.

The snowfall means the fire won’t grow any further, but crews will continue to work on hot spots.

While some day-use areas of the park reopened Sept. 28, the public is reminded other areas are still closed. The fire created hazards like danger trees, rock falls, and ash pits.
