LETHBRIDGE – The snow has started falling, and there’s a lot more to come.

Winter storm warnings are in effect west of Lethbridge, including Fort Macleod, Cardston, Blood Reserve, Piikani Reserve, Pincher Creek, Waterton, and Crowsnest Pass. Those areas could get up to 40 cm of snow by the weekend.

Claresholm and Nanton are in a snowfall warning, with up to 25 cm expected, and potentially more in the foothills.

Lethbridge is not in a weather warning, but Environment Canada’s forecast indicates as much as 25 cm of snow by the time it’s done. Most of Western Canada is being blanketed by the snow and colder air, as the jet stream dips all the way down into Wyoming and South Dakota.

Snowplows are out in Lethbridge, and the speed limit on Whoop-Up Drive remains at 60 km/h. Early reports from 511 Alberta indicate highways in all directions around Lethbridge are snow-covered. Highway 3 around Fort Macleod is partially ice-covered.

Coalhurst Fire Department responded to a late-night crash on Highway 3 near Monarch, but that scene has been cleared.
