Reece Klassen posts first career victory over the Vancouver Giants as Lethbridge Hurricanes win two straight

LETHBRIDGE – Lethbridge Hurricanes rookie goaltender Reece Klassen picked a good night for his first career WHL victory, a 5-2 decision over the Vancouver Giants on Wednesday night (Nov. 22) in front of his friends and family in his home town.

It was the Hurricanes second straight victory after beating the Victoria Royals 10-4 on Tuesday night.

The Hurricanes came out determined for a second straight night, grabbing a 1-0 lead at 10:54 of the 1st period thanks to captain Giorgio Estephan’s 12th goal of the season.

Giants captain Tyler Benson tied the game up at 1-1 just under four mintues later, but the Hurricanes would take a 2-1 lead into the 2nd period when Ryan Bowen scored his 1st goal of the season with 28 seconds to go in the 1st.

The Hurricanes added to their lead when Ryan Vandervlis hit the back of the net early in the 2nd period, his fourth goal in two nights. Later in the second Jordy Bellerive would score his 12 th of the season, to give the Hurricanes a 4-1 lead after two periods.

Midway through the 3rd period the Giants would cut the lead to 4-2 thanks to a goal by Ty Ronning, but that’s as close as Vancouver would come. Hurricanes forward Taylor Ross also added an insurance goal late in the period for the 5-2 final.

Ryan Vandervlis, Ryan Bowen and Dylan Cozens all led the way for Lethbridge with two points a piece, while Reece Klassen made 19 saves in the victory.

The Canes went 0-for-2 on the PP, but dominated for a second straight night in the shots department outshooting Vancouver 40-23 overall.

With the win, the Hurricanes now sit at 9-12-1-0 on the season, good for 19 points and third place in the Central Division.

Next up for Lethbridge is the last game of their B.C. road trip on Saturday night (Nov. 25) against the Kootenay Ice.
