MEDICINE HAT – A 28-year old man from Lethbridge has been charged after a joint investigation between ALERT, Lethbridge Police, RCMP, and Medicine Hat Police found more than a kilogram of methamphetamine during an early morning traffic stop three days ago.

Police say 28-year-old Michael Abate has been charged with drug trafficking and possession of the proceeds of crime. 47-year-old Shonna Scriven of Medicine Hat is also facing charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking (x2), and possession of the proceeds of crime.

According to ALERT (Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team), on Dec. 8, police initiated a planned traffic stop on Hwy 3 just inside Medicine Hat city limits. In the trunk of a rental vehicle they found just over one kilogram of methamphetamine, 226 g of cocaine and $125,000 in cash.

Police believe the drugs were coming into the city by way of Lethbridge. The meth seizure is believed to be the largest ever in Medicine Hat.

Abate remains in custody and will appear in Lethbridge court Dec. 13, while Scriven is expected to appear in Medicine Hat court Dec. 14.
