CALGARY – In spite of an undoubtedly challenging road trip up Highway-2 to Calgary, through blowing snow, the Lethbridge Hurricanes weren’t phased. The team stepped on the ice at the Saddledome and took control of the first period.

Jordy Bellerive laid down his 20th of the season and the game’s first goal for the Canes at 13:24. The power play scoring action came with help from Giorgio Estephan and Tate Olson.  In the last minute of play, Egor Zudilov put the puck through the pipes, to give the Canes a 2-0 lead over the Hitmen.  The period ended with the Canes out shooting Calgary 11-4.

While the first period belonged to the Canes, the second frame saw fortunes turn for the Hitmen, and one specific player. Left Wing Andrei Grishakov notched his team’s first goal of the game at 3:15, and then tied the game on a power play four minutes later.

The second period ended with shots-on-goal more evenly matched, but the Canes still ahead 16-14.

After the first two periods resulted in a draw, the third period produced no goals for either team and the game went to a short-lived overtime. Just 56 seconds into extra time, Calgary’s Mark Kastelic scored the game winner.

Goalie Reece Klassen made 27 saves, as the Canes out-shot the Hitmen 42-30.

Lethbridge will start the new year holding third place in the Central Division, with a game in hand and a record of 16-17-3-0. The team hosts second place Kootenay on Tuesday (Jan 3) night, 7:00 at the Enmax.
