LETHBRIDGE – It seemed apparent Friday morning that the worst of the winter storm missed Lethbridge. But the city wasn’t spared from the cold that followed.

An extreme cold warning was issued Friday for the Lethbridge/Taber/Milk River, Brooks/Strathmore/Vulcan, Cypress Hills/Foremost, and Medicine Hat/Bow Island regions, as well as other parts of eastern Alberta. Wind chills in the -40 range were expected in the morning.

Environment Canada did not provide a snowfall total for the city. But the MD of Willow Creek received an estimated 15 cm, while 16-20 cm fell on Brooks, and Medicine Hat received 21 cm.

Totals were higher in the mountains. Frank, in the Crowsnest Pass, recorded 30-40 cm. Lake Louise had the most, at 48 cm, while Calgary was in the 25-40 cm range.

As of Friday morning, Feb. 9, travel was not being recommended from Coleman west to the B.C. boundary due to snow-covered conditions and expected icy surfaces.

Highways in the immediate Lethbridge area were reported as partly covered with packed snow. Highways north and east of Taber, and west of Fort Macleod, were described as bare dry. Highway 3 in the Crowsnest Pass was listed as snow-covered.

Among the multiple collisions Thursday, a semi tanker rolled over west of Pincher Cree Thursday evening.
