Mar 6, 2018 | 7:27 PM

BRANDON – Special teams proved to be the difference for the Lethbridge Hurricanes in a 6-0 loss to the Brandon Wheat Kings on Tuesday, Mar. 6.

The Wheat Kings opened the scoring at 6:45 of the first period when Stelio Mattheos buried his 39th of the season past Hurricanes goaltender Logan Flodell on the powerplay to make it 1-0.

Then at 14:14 Brandon increased their lead to 2-0 thanks to a goal by Luka Burzan, and just before the horn sounded to end the first period Ty Lewis scored his 40th of the season to make it 3-0 for the Wheat Kings after one.

Shots in the first period favoured the Hurricanes 14-9.

Flodell got the hook after the first, but once the second period got underway things carried on the same as Mattheos buried his second of the night on the power play to make it 4-0 for Brandon.

With under five minutes to go in the period, defenceman Matthew Stanley tried to change the momentum by dropping the gloves against Caiden Daley.

The plan backfired when the referees handed him a two-minute instigator penalty, and a ten-minute misconduct to go along with five minutes for fighting.

On the ensuing powerplay, Ty Lewis scored again for the Wheat Kings to make it 5-0. Brandon’s Chase Hartje added goal with under four minutes to play in the game to make the final score 6-0.

Brandon finished the game 3 for 6 on the powerplay, while the Hurricanes man advantage went 0 for 8.

Shots finished up at 33-22 in favour of Brandon as well.

With the loss, the Hurricanes record sits at 32-26-6 on the season still sitting solidly in second place in the Central Division.

Following tonight’s game, the Hurricanes will have a quick turnaround when they travel to Moose Jaw where they’ll wrap up their four-game road trip on Wednesday against the Warriors.

Just seven games remain on the WHL regular season schedule for Lethbridge, three on home ice and four on the road.
