CALGARY – Army Cadets from the Lethbridge area marched their way to victory in the annual Spielman Cup Drill Competition at Calgary last Saturday, April 14.

They were competing against Army cadet units from throughout southern Alberta, including units from Calgary.

The cadets from Lethbridge will now compete in the provincial finals, the Kozar Cup, in Edmonton on May 5.

Army Cadets is a youth program for boys and girls ages 12-18, and its objectives are citizenship, leadership, physical fitness and familiarization with the Canadian Armed Forces.

2296 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps entered a 10-cadet team for the first time in recent memory, and the team included three female cadets.

The fact that they were up against veteran teams from larger units makes their success more impressive.

The unit’s commanding officer, Capt. Brian Hamilton, says in their unit they challenge the cadets to ‘aim for perfection in order to achieve excellence’.

“The drill team unquestionably did this on Saturday. Their coaches and I could not be prouder,” Hamilton added.

The competition consisted of three parts, all requiring precise, synchronized movement according to Hamilton.

One part required the team to execute 30 movements in complete silence.
