LPS remove old artillery round found inside Lethbridge home
LETHBRIDGE – The Lethbridge Police Service explosive disposal unit was able to safely remove an old artillery round from a city home Monday afternoon (Sept. 25).
Patrols were called to the residence in the 800 block of 8 Avenue South and the area was evacuated, after the ordinance was discovered in a basement and brought out into the backyard.
“Initially when the call came in, you don’t know what the risk is, so you assume the worst,” explained Cst. David Easter. “We don’t know if it’s a live round, we don’t know if it’s a damaged round or somethings been modified. So, we want to take precautions for the public around here until we can identify what it is, and then we can start to downgrade the risk level at that time.”
After arriving at the scene and determining that it was an artillery round from the Second World War, Easter says the Department of National Defence informed them that it was “safe enough” for them to transport.
