Time to rethink compression socks – They’re not just for the elderly

LETHBRIDGE — “Compression stockings don’t look like the socks your grandma used to wear” says Emilie Soper. “They come in all sorts of different textures and colors so you can wear them with any outfit or during any activity.”

Adaptive Technologies is trying to break the stigma of compression stockings by educating everyone on the importance of their use. Most of the time you hear about people wearing them for swelling due to medical reasons, or on planes, but you don’t realize that they provide a benefit for everyday use as well.

For instance, if your job requires you to sit or stand all day, compression stockings are very beneficial to keep the blood moving upward. Due to your calf sitting stagnant your blood can pool in your legs, so the compression socks help keep your circulation going.

“I wear them everyday to work” says Rianna Wilson. “Not only do they help keep my legs from swelling, they also prevent achiness and fatigue from sitting all day.”

More variety of compression socks for everyday wear

“Most people don’t realize that there are multiple reasons to wear compression stockings, including to help decrease lactic acid build up during exercise, which decreases recovery time and soreness in your muscles.” says Ryan Cochrane.

Ryan is no stranger to heavy workouts as he pushes himself to the limit at Frameworks Crossfit multiple times per week.

“I have used compression socks during my workouts and find that they definitely decrease my recovery time.” says Cochrane.

Whether you are active, inactive, have a physically demanding job, or sedentary job, most people could benefit from compression. The only contraindications to wearing them would be if you had an arterial deficiency, meaning your blood has a hard time getting down to your toes.

At Adaptive Technologies they carry a wide range of compression socks, from over the counter to medical grade. It’s always important to check and see if you have coverage as most insurance companies will cover compression socks as long as it’s prescribed by your physician.
