Adaptive Technologies is excited to announce they are offering cranial remolding helmets by SnugKap!

Cranial remolding helmets are used to correct flat spots that can arise when babies spend a significant amount of time resting on one area of their head.

Some medical conditions, such as premature babies and torticollis, can cause flat spots. For instance, premature babies are more prevalent to developing a flat spot as they are usually spending a lot of time laying due to medial needs. Whereas torticollis is a tightness in the neck muscles which can cause baby to turn their head one way leading to a flat spot.

“We all see the posters for tummy time and its importance on prevention of the flattening of a baby’s skull, but it can happen quite easily.” says Ryan Cochrane.

“My second child wore a helmet for a period of time when he was younger, and at that time, the cranial helmets were quite heavy and hot – my son had a hard time wearing it.”

It’s important to monitor your child’s growth and alternate their head position while they sleep to prevent flat spots from developing, and that spot can develop quite easily, especially if you have a content baby who is happy just laying down most of the time.

Adaptive Technologies is happy to be able to offer helmets through SnugKap, which is a company based in Vancouver. The helmets are 3D printed. They’re lightweight, breathable and comfortable.

“Not only are we excited about using a Canadian company with very innovative designs, but the turnaround time for the helmets is five business days.” notes Koji Duncan.

“This is crucial, as babies’ heads are growing and changing at a fast rate and the quicker, we can get a helmet on them the quicker we improve the flat spots” continues, Duncan. “Although, most flat spots do not generally cause health issues, a lot of parents are concerned about the aesthetic appearance.”

What most people forget to think about regarding a nonsymmetric head is that having a misshaped head can lead to problems with fitting into bike or sports helmets, hats or whatever else you might want to fit.

Whatever the reason for a flat spot, Adaptive Technologies wants to be a part of the process that ensures that person, whether very young or a bit older, receives the best care and treatment for their individual needs.
