STANDOFF, AB – The Blood Tribe says one case of COVID-19 has been identified at a local school, the first to occur on the reserve.

The local Emergency Management Team was informed by the Kainai Board of Education (KBE) that the positive test was at Tatsikiisaapo’p Middle School.

It was not specified if the affected person was a student or staff member as a means of respecting the privacy of the individual.

“Blood Tribe officials from KBE, Blood Tribe Department of Health, Indigenous Services Canada – First Nations and Inuit Health Branch, and Blood Tribe Emergency Management are taking all the necessary steps to contain the virus and support the individual during this difficult time.”

The school was already scheduled to be closed Friday.

“All KBE staff worked very hard to ensure to answer the call to provide a safe environment for all students and staff, as our community faced these extraordinary circumstances. We commend them all for their diligence and ask the community to help support them with encouragement and kindness.”

The Blood Tribe will update residents as more information becomes available.
