TABER, AB – The current mayor of Taber will seek his second full term at the head of town council.

Andrew Prokop will be seeking re-election in this fall’s municipal elections.

He told LNN that he wants to continue his work and continue to improve life in the community.

“I thoroughly enjoyed it. I love the information involved and the planning that goes along with it. Definitely, there’s some struggles from time to time as a council, but we work through that as best we can, but overall, we have a great team in Taber including our entire council and our administration and Town of Taber staff.”

Prokop was first elected as a councillor in 2013 and filled in as interim mayor for the last six months of that term. He was elected as mayor in 2017 for the term that is now about to come to an end.

“Both terms have gone by fairly quickly and I feel there’s more work to be done and there is. We’ve accomplished quite a lot with the last two councils being very proactive councils. I’m fortunate to be part of two proactive councils that have been very helpful in getting things done yesterday, so to speak.”

Some of his highlights from his time in office so far include the completion of the Trout Pond campground project, finishing work on the intersection of Highway 864 and 56 Ave, and overseeing the construction of the William Ferguson Emergency Services building.

If re-elected, Prokop says he wants to focus on three main pillars – economic growth, recreational opportunities and enhancements, and priority needs for the municipality.

As of the time of publication, one other person has filed nomination papers for the mayoral seat in Taber.

General voting day for the 2021 Alberta municipal elections is October 18.
