Work on twinning Highway 3 continues

MEDICINE HAT, AB – At first glance, the province’s latest capital plan for roads and bridges in Alberta, appears to contain discouraging news about progress on the twinning of Highway 3.

While the document shows the project is still in the design phase, the lobby group that’s been working with the province to get shovels in the ground says work is actually progressing quickly.

Victoria Chester, the director of advancement with the Highway 3 Twinning Development Association, says the province has been assembling the land needed for the first section of twinning, from Taber to Burdett.

She anticipates a contractor could be in place by this fall.

“The association believes that Highway 3 is well underway, and we are really looking forward to this fall when the proponent/contractor is selected by the department of transportation and we get underway with actual dirt-moving,” says Chester.

Chester says there’s been a lot going on in the background from a construction and project management standpoint, and that “it’s a misconception if there’s people believing that nothing’s occurring.”

Once the section from Taber to Burdett has been twinned, Chester says it’s hoped the next section would see the road doubled between Medicine Hat city limits to Seven Persons.

Work is also underway to convince the federal government of the importance of Highway 3 as a key cog in the supply chain, and to invest money in the project too.
