LETHBRIDGE, AB – Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services (LFES) has received national recognition for its commitment to excellence in care and organizational performance.

The process to obtain the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Accreditation Certification from Accreditation Canada included following over 300 standards. These include diligent hand hygiene to narcotics safety. The accreditation process assessed EMS teams against comprehensive criteria to measure the quality of the service they deliver. The process evaluates different aspects of operation efficiency, such as clinical care, emergency response, vehicle/equipment, training, professional development, and quality improvement.

The LFES team received an Accreditation with Commendation, which is an A+ score.

Accreditation is a requirement of the City of Lethbridge’s contract with Alberta Health Services to provide emergency medical services. More than 80 policies had to be reviewed and updated to meet the requirements, which were audited by two external surveyors.

Christopher Fahey, Accreditation and Logistics Officer with LFES said, “This certification not only acknowledges the organization’s devotion to best practices, but also provides a reassurance to the community of the level of quality and safety for our city.”

The accreditation process is normally done every four years. However, due to delays caused by COVID-19, it has been five years since the LFES team has received the certification.
