LETHBRIDGE, AB – A 2018 Humboldt Broncos bus crash survivor spoke about the importance of mental health and kindness with Lethbridge students on Thursday.

Tyler Smith visited Winston Churchill High School and G.S. Lakie Middle School for two Green Shirt Day presentations on March 28, 2024. Smith was a teammate of Lethbridge’s Logan Boulet, one of the 16 people killed as a result of the April 6, 2018 collision. Both schools were attended by Logan.

Green Shirt Day aims to honour Logan’s legacy, celebrate the lives of those lost and impacted by the crash and raise awareness on organ donation.

Following his presentation at G.S. Lakie, Smith said, “Today is a special day, being able to rock the green shirt is something that is super important to me, and just us being able to tandem awareness together.”

The 25-year-old shared his story as a member of the Broncos team, and his mental health struggles following the fatal collision.

Smith remarked how important it is to speak about mental health to younger audiences.

Smith was joined at the school events by Toby Boulet, Logan’s father.

Boulet said, “It’s super important to the Boulet family that Tyler came today.”

“For him to come here, share his side of the story and mesh it with Logan’s story, and to have one child go home and have a conversation…it’s a win-win.”

Tyler and his fiancée Kat Kastner made TV headlines across the country last year when they won season nine of The Amazing Race Canada. Smith said throughout their time on the show, he wanted to represent his former teammates and friends who died in the crash.

Earlier this week, Lethbridge City Council voted unanimously to have the Mayor’s Office again declare April 7 as Green Shirt Day. Mayor Blaine Hyggen said he wants to bring this item to council every year, instead of it being just a one-time declaration, to continually highlight Logan Boulet’s impact.

Following Logan’s death, his organ donation saved six lives. Canada saw a surge in organ donor registration, in what has become known as “The Logan Boulet Effect”.
