Commemorative $10 bank note unveiled by Bank of Canada

Apr 7, 2017 | 10:18 AM

OTTAWA –   A new-look $10 bank note will begin circulation on June 1.  The commemorative bank note was designed to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Confederation and showcases Canada’s history, land and culture.

There are several unique elements to the new $10 bill including one that has never been done before.  Canadian bank notes usually portray a single individual but, the new note will feature four individuals:   Sir John A. Macdonald, Sir George-Étienne Cartier, Agnes Macphail and James Gladstone or Akay-na-muka—his Blackfoot name.

A news release from the Bank of Canada, states “the four parliamentarians remind us that Canada has been shaped by the vision, courage and effort of people of different backgrounds.”

The commemorative bank note will, for the first time, incorporate a Canadian woman and an Indigenous Canadian.  More information on the commemorative note can be found on the Bank of Canada website.

The Canada 150 note does not replace the regular $10 note and will simply circulate alongside the current bill.

Last December, it was announced the first Canadian woman to be featured on a regularly circulating bank note would be human rights and freedoms icon Viola Desmond.  That $10 note is expected to be released in late 2018.
