COALDALE – Coaldale RCMP, along with a number of dignitaries, confirmed the location of their future detachment Monday afternoon (Sept. 11), by unveiling a sign.

The site is located at 19 A Ave. and 8 St. in Coaldale, along Highway 3.

While the new building remains in the architectural planning stages, RCMP Chief Superintendent Tony Hamori, says they’re making progress, while ensuring the facility meets all of their needs.

“We are in the process of just making a few tweaks to the interior plan, because we do have several different units that are going to be inside the building, and we want to make sure the space is functional and works for everybody,” he explained.

“We are going to have, obviously, the Coaldale RCMP detachment working out of this building… we will also have the regional integrated traffic unit, the forensic identification section, our police dog service will be working out of there, and one of our federal Border Integrity units will be placed in the building too,” Hamori continued.

While Hamori says they don’t have a specific date yet for the sod turning of the new detachment – which will stand on about five acres of land – it will happen in the next fiscal year, 2018-19.

He also acknowledged the significance of having such a hub located in southern Alberta.

“It’s going to be tremendously important, because our district headquarters is in Airdrie and we don’t have this sort of level of regional representation this far south,” said Hamori. “So, it’s really going to elevate our profile for the area, and I’m sure for the town of Coaldale as well.”
