LETHBRIDGE – Another sign that the unforgettable winter of 2017-18 is behind us happens this weekend. Two of the most prominent attractions in Lethbridge are opening for the season.

Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden is celebrating opening weekend May 5-6. The traditional garden celebrated its 50th birthday last year with a visit from Japan’s Princess Ayako of Takamado. In November it was designated as a Provincial Heritage Resource.

The garden, located in Henderson Lake Park, is open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. daily during May and June. For the opening, Saturday, May 5, it will be open until 7 p.m. and include a 5 p.m. screening of the 1984 film “The Karate Kid.” Sunday’s activities will include a performance by the Lethbridge Community Taiko Association.

Also on Sunday, May 6 Fort Whoop-Up opens for the season. The recreation of a 19th-century trading post is now operated by the Galt Museum and Archives. It tells the story of the Lethbridge region as it was from the 1860s to the 1890s.

Once again this year, wagon rides will be offered daily, pulled by a team of Clydesdale and Percheron horses.

Fort Whoop-Up is in the river valley at Indian Battle Park. It’s open daily, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. (9 p.m. Thursdays) and 1-5 p.m. holidays.
