Jobless rate tumbles in Lethbridge region in May

LETHBRIDGE – The unemployment rate for the Lethbridge-Medicine Hat region continued to improve in May.

The unadjusted three-month moving average rate for the region was 5.2 per cent, down significantly from an even six per cent in April. It marks three straight months of improvement.

Only Camrose-Drumheller (unchanged at four per cent) and Red Deer (4.9 per cent, down from 5.1) had a lower rate in the monthly report. Calgary and Edmonton showed slight decreases, while unemployment rose in Wood Buffalo-Cold Lake and Banff-Jasper-Rocky Mountain House/Athabasca-Grande Prairie-Peace River.

Alberta’s unemployment rate dropped from 6.7 to 6.2 per cent from April to May. The province recorded a net gain of 2,900 jobs as well as a decline in the labour force of 8,100.

More than 37,000 more people were working in Alberta in May compared to a year earlier.

Seasonally-adjusted job growth was recorded in the resources, construction, education, trade, culture/information, and accommodation/food service sectors, while agriculture, manufacturing, finance/real estate/insurance sectors showed declines.
