LETHBRIDGE – Housing starts during May in the Lethbridge area showed a slight increase over 2017, in numbers released by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. (CMHC)

Construction began in the Lethbridge Census Metropolitan Area on 65 new homes during the month, an increase of 14 per cent over May 2017. The increase was accounted for entirely in multiple-family dwellings, with 24 starts, up from 14, while single-family home starts decreased by two to 41.

Year-to-date, Lethbridge is still down, with a total of 226, a decrease of 8 per cent. The decrease comes from the surrounding area, with starts within city limits running slightly higher than last year.

In a news release, CMHC said inventories of multi-family housing have been relatively low.

Around the province, Calgary is up 19 per cent so far this year while Medicine Hat is up 44 per cent. Edmonton is down 19 per cent, Grande Prairie is 35 per cent lower, Red Deer is down 34 per cent, and Wood Buffalo, where numbers are affected by the Fort McMurray rebuild, is lower by 40 per cent.
