Kodiaks women’s basketball team prepares for playoffs, men’s team fighting for post-season berth

Feb 22, 2019 | 7:19 AM

OLDS, AB – The Lethbridge College Kodiaks basketball teams wrap up their ACAC regular seasons this weekend. Both squads are on the road against the Olds College Broncos.

This weekend’s games will each have playoff implications.

The women’s team, currently at 13-6 on the season, face the 15-4 Broncos Friday, Feb. 22 at 6 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 23 at 1 p.m.

The Kodiaks were riding a seven-game win streak before losing to Briercrest last Saturday. However, the team is still tied for third place in the ACAC south division.

The team has already clinched a playoff berth, but with just one victory over Olds, they will clinch third place. The Kodiaks can also clinch third if St. Mary’s University loses to Medicine Hat College on Friday.

The last time the two teams met, the only meeting of the season so far, Olds won 81-73.

Juhee Anderson is leading the Kodiaks women’s team in scoring, with 15.7 points per game.

KODIAKS MEN’S TEAM

The men’s team is in a rougher spot than the women’s squad. The Kodiaks finds themselves only two points out of the playoffs with two games remaining.

They will face Olds Friday, Feb. 22 at 8 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 23 at 3 p.m.

If the Kodiaks sweep Olds this weekend and Red Deer College loses both of its games to last place Briercrest College, the Kodiaks will make the playoffs.

A second scenario is if the team can win both of their games and Medicine Hat College loses its final game to St. Mary’s University on Friday, the Kodiaks will make the playoffs.

The ACAC’s all-time leader in assists and steals, Michael Clemons, will be playing his last regular season game with the team.

The last time the two teams met, the Kodiaks beat Olds 90-64.

Both games will be streamed live on www.acactv.ca/en/.
