City Council approves Reconciliation Advisory Committee 2018 funding request

LETHBRIDGE – The city’s Reconciliation Advisory Committee is getting a cash injection this year.

At Monday’s meeting, a request was made by the committee’s Amanda Scout, for $25,000 for 2018, and for $50,000 per year from 2019-2022.

Scout is also the Community Engagement and Partnerships Coordinator for Native Counselling Services.

She says the decision shows that the city is serious about its reconciliation efforts.

“It’s great news. We’re very grateful, and it show that they really are committed to this work that we’re doing together.”

The committee is made up of members from the City of Lethbridge, the Lethbridge Indigenous Sharing Network (LISN), neighbouring First Nations, the business sector, education sector and community members at large.

According to council documents, the $25,000 will be used mainly to support Reconciliation Week in September. The other monies, which have not yet been approved, would be used by the committee to fund each of the objectives as outlined in the Reconciliation Implementation Plan.

They include communication and public awareness, service provision, cultural identity and heritage, and commemoration.

The Reconciliation Advisory Committee will also provide a yearly report to council on progress of the Reconciliation Implementation Plan, regularly review “calls to action,” provide advice to city council on urban indigenous issues, ensure communication and community engagement and several other tasks.

Council unanimously approved the $25,000, however the request for money in the future will be considered by council during budget deliberations in the fall

The money will come from existing council committee budgets.
