Lethbridge Sports Hall of Fame announces Kinsmen Sportspersons of the Year

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Lethbridge Hall of Fame is set to honour athletes, teams and builders that have made an impact in their respective fields this spring.

The Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place at the ENMAX Centre in May.

In addition to the previously announced inductees, the Hall will also recognize the 2018 Kinsmen Sportspersons of the Year at the special gala.

The two individuals recognized as sportspersons of the year are Sandra Latrace and Rob Klinkhammer.

SANDRA LATRACE

Latrace returned to action with the University of Lethbridge’s track and field team in 2018. She had missed the last indoor season due to injury. The Brooks native opened the Canada West indoor track season with long jump gold medals in each of the Golden Bears Open and Bison Classic meets.

She also secured a gold medal in 60-metre dash at the University of Manitoba meet. At the Canada West Championship, Latrace won gold in the long jump and secured her first conference medal in the 60-metre sprint, earning bronze.

She capped off the season with a gold medal finish at the U SPORTS Championship meet with a season-best leap of 5.98 metres, 13 centimetres ahead of the second-place finisher. Latrace has a career undefeated record in long jump and was named the Pronghorns Female Athlete of the Year.

Off the track, Latrace was named an Academic All-Canadian for holding down at least an 80 per cent average in the classroom.

ROB KLINKHAMMER

The Lethbridge-born minor hockey player had an amazing 2018. He brought home a bronze medal as part of the Canadian Men’s Olympic Hockey Team that competed in PyeongChang, South Korea in February 2018. During the Olympic tournament, Klinkhammer recorded two points for Canada.

After finishing a WHL career that included parts of three seasons with the local Lethbridge Hurricanes in 2007, Klinkhammer has spent time in the AHL, the KHL and the NHL. He currently plays in the KHL for Kazan Ak-Bars in Russia, following his last NHL season in Edmonton in 2016.

The 2019 Lethbridge Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony takes place on May 3.
